If you install your electric fence in a rocky, sandy, dry or frozen soil you should install more ground rods.

Step One: Power

First, you will connect your ground hook-up wires and your fence, then switch on the power.

Step 2 – Check Voltage

Use your electric fence doctor to read the voltage on the ground wire.

Step 3: Analyzing Results

You will look at the reading on the LCD display and interpret your results as follows.

If the reading is more than 400 volts, it means that your ground rod is leaking a lot of voltage. You will sort this by making the rods deeper or add more ground rods.

Conduct another test after making the adjustments.

In case the reading is below 400 volts then the system is adequately grounded.

Test 4: Hook Up Wire Test

An electric fence has a hookup wire which goes from your energizer’s positive terminal to your fence.

The second hook up wire starts from the negative terminal to the first ground rod.

These hookup wires have to securely connect to their final destination and energizer with proper connectivity.

You should test both of these wires using the following steps:

Step 1: Preparing the System

First, you must turn off the power supply system to avoid electric shocks.

After that, you will examine both connections to ensure they are securely connected.

If one or more of the wires are loosely attached, reattach them and turn the power on.

If it works, well and good, however, you will not move to step 2.

Step 2: Disconnect the Hook-Up Line

You keep the hookup line attached to the terminal but disconnect it from the fence.

You must ensure that the ground rod-hook is fully attached.

Step 3: Actual Test

Turn the power on and then use a voltage tester to check the output of the hookup wire.

You will perform the test on the hookup wire which is often attached to the fence.

Step 5: Interpreting Results

You will analyze the results on the LCD display screen as follows.

If you have a reading of below 1,500 volts, it means that your hook-up wire is accidentally grounding itself in away.

You can fix this problem by making sure you use 20 VK insulated wire.

Next, turn your power off, and replace it then recheck your reading.

If the voltage on the hookup wire indicates over 1,500 volts, then the hookup wire is good. Attach this line to the fence then move to the next stage.

Once you have tried the other tests with no success, you must conduct a test along the length of the fence.

Step 1: Turn the power on

Step 2: Walk at an interval of 100 meters and test your line.
