Electric Fence Netting—Your Ultimate FAQ Guide

The benefit of living in the 21st century is how many options consumers have, such as electric fence netting. This practical fencing product sets up quickly and is ideal to create boundaries or protect animals. It works for both homeowners and on farms.

We want to help you find the best electric fence netting to stock for your client base. Get educated and learn more about this interesting product with our user-friendly guide below.

What is Electric Fence Netting?

Electric fence netting is a pre-manufactured set of fencing. You can use it as a temporary or permanent boundary fence.

The wires create a net effect. You can connect the netting to a power source and electrify it. This creates an effective fence that will generate a small shock to deter animals from trying to pass.

What are the Benefits of Electric Fence Netting?

Electric fence netting is a wise investment thanks to these benefits:

  • It’s easily portable and you can set it up anywhere on your property
  • You can quickly move a boundary fence without much effort or equipment
  • It’s a light fence, so it’s easy to handle and set up even if you’re working alone
  • The fence is easy to power
  • These fences are strong enough to protect animals or deter them
  • You’ll have a versatile product that you can use in various situations
  • When you don’t use your netting you can put it in storage so you don’t have to buy a new product later on
  • You’ll receive a fencing kit that’s ready to install without any assembly on your part; simply place the posts in the ground and connect your fence

What does Electric Fence Netting Consist of?

Each electric fence netting set consists of:

  • Horizontal, electrifiable strings, often made of polywire
  • Vertical strings that create a mesh design with the horizontal strings
  • Posts that you use to secure the netting in the ground
  • Spikes on the bottom of posts that help secure them
  • Metal clips on either end of the netting to which you attach the power source

The electric fence netting set is sold as a unit with all components already assembled. You can simply connect it to a power source for it to start working.

How to Manufacture Electric Fence Netting

When manufacturers produce electric fence netting they use plastic strings for the vertical wires. For the horizontal lines they’ll use electrifiable string.

This can be polywire, which is polyethylene filaments and metal wire that are woven together. These two types of string are joined together to create a strong net.

In quality products, such as the ones Elife manufactures, the manufacturer reinforces each joint. This prevents the net from tearing or breaking when an animal tries to push past.

What Typical Types of Electric Fence Netting are Available?

Some users only need to keep small animals contained, so they don’t need high fences. Others may need to prevent larger animals from getting to their poultry.

The electric fence netting industry provides products for all these uses. You can shop for electric fence netting of different heights.

Netting of different heights will have different numbers of horizontal strings.

So, if you need a higher fence, go for the netting with more horizontal wires. Popular heights include:

  • 9 lines
  • 10 lines
  • 14 lines

You can also purchase electric fence netting of different lengths, but a common length is 164ft (50m). You can buy longer fences if you need to put in a very long boundary.

The market also supplies electric fence netting in different colors. Orange is popular because it’s often more visible than white. You’ll also find other colors such as green.

How Does Electric Fence Netting Work?

You set up your electric fence netting as a boundary or around animals that you want to protect. You’ll then connect the netting to a power source that can push electricity through the horizontal wires.

When an animal or other intruder touches the fence to get past it or reach your animals, they will experience a shock. This is because the intruder becomes part of the path the electricity needs to travel through.

They will experience the shock as a slight pain, deterring them from trying to push through. They will also associate pain with anything that resembles the electric fence netting.

This will prevent them from trying to get past it in future. They will avoid it since they don’t want to experience pain again.

Can You Power Electric Fence Netting with Solar Power?

With this type of fencing you can use a number of power sources. You can hook it up to a solar-powered unit and it will supply enough energy to result in a shock for intruders.

There are many solar panels on the market, specifically designed to power this type of electric fence. They have different wattage levels so you can purchase according to your needs.

Where can Electric Fence Netting be Used?

Property owners find many different uses for electric fence netting. The most common uses include the following:

  • Boundaries: You can easily create a boundary fence to keep animals restricted to a certain area.
  • Protection: When you need to keep animals out of your garden, electric fence netting is a user-friendly method to use. You don’t need to lay a foundation for a wall or install major electric wiring. All you need is a power source and your electric fence netting set.
  • Cages: Provide small animals a safe area to live by setting up electric fence netting around them. This is practical to keep chickens and other poultry safe. They can still walk around their nests freely but they can’t run away and bigger animals can’t easily get to them.

For What Animals Will Electric Fence Netting Typically Work?

Electric fence netting is a popular choice for anyone who has poultry. It’s so easy to set up around chickens or other poultry and the netting’s gaps are small enough so the birds can’t get through. This is much more effective for poultry than standard fencing or even electrified fencing such as polywire.

Just note that the wire isn’t so effective if you have small chicks. The gaps won’t be small enough to prevent them from getting through. Also, the bottom strings may not be electrified, so the fence won’t deter them from getting through in future.

People also use electric fence netting for larger animals such as pigs, goats and sheep. This makes the products valuable investments for the agricultural industry.

It’s a practical solution whether you want to keep your animals safe from predators at night or keep them grazing in a certain area.

Even dog owners find electric fence netting helpful. Perhaps you’re still training your dog to listen to your instructions so you need a way to keep it from running away.

If you don’t want your dog to move outside your property, the netting is an easy boundary to set up. You don’t have to change your property and add a permanent fixture. Once the dog is trained and knows the rules you can remove the netting.

What are the Specifications of Electric Fence Netting to Use for Sheep and Goats?

When you create a barrier for sheep or goats you usually have to use electric fence netting that has at least nine or 10 horizontal strands. This will prevent them from jumping over. Popular products are 35” (90cm) high

You also have to make sure that you install the electric fence netting with the lowest strand close to the ground. The animals shouldn’t be able to get through underneath the fence. Also, you don’t want predators that like to crawl under fences to get through easily.

Make sure the lines are close enough to each other that your animals can’t easily push their heads through the gaps. Avoid them accidentally getting caught in the electric fence netting and struggling to get their heads back.

When it comes to the energizer specs, look for energizers that can maintain a Volt rating of 3000V or more. This should suffice for larger predators that often come after sheep and goats.

It’s important to train your animals in terms of your fence. Bring them close to the fence to touch it and experience a shock. If they felt it once they won’t do it again. Then you can have peace of mind that your animals aren’t hurting themselves while you’re elsewhere on the property.

What are the Specifications of Electric Fence Netting that Will Work for Poultry?

When you’re shopping for electric fence netting for poultry, you need to think of the birds as well as predators. Your fence must be high enough so other animals can’t easily jump over and gain access to the birds.

In addition, you also need to consider your birds. The netting should have smaller holes near the ground so your poultry can’t force their way through.

It must also be high enough so they can’t fly over. If some chickens do tend to fly over, clip their wings. Make sure they can’t escape the safe environment you create for them.

Can Electric Fence Netting be Used for a Paddock?

Electric fence netting is a versatile product that you can use for many purposes in agriculture. You can even consider using it to create boundaries for your paddock.

This can keep other animals from wandering into your horses’ space. Also, the netting will prevent some horses from breaking out of the paddock.

However, there are more effective electric fencing products for horses on today’s market. These are thicker, more visible and produce a harsh enough shock.

Examples are polywire, polyrope and polytape. For larger animals such as horses this can be a better alternative and these fencing options are also relatively easy to install.

Can You Use 2 Sets of Electric Fence Netting Together?

The flexibility of electric fence netting is one of the main benefits. Most sets of netting are +/-160ft long.

If you need more netting for long boundary lines or to protect large areas, simply add another set. The different sets easily clip together and then the electricity you hook up will run through all of them.

What Size Area can You Enclose with Electric Fence Netting?

If you plan on creating an enclosed area, you can use the following to plan how many sets of electric fence netting you need:

  • One set of 160ft can enclose +/- 1600ft²

If you have a larger area to protect, simply add more netting sets.

Will Electric Fence Netting Keep Predators Out?

Your electric fence netting will work well for certain predators but not all of them.

Firstly, identify the type of potential dangers you expect. If you need to keep pigs, dogs or small animals out of your garden, simply make sure your fence is high enough.

Those predators shouldn’t be able to jump over. It must also have small enough holes so the pests can’t get through.

If the danger is larger animals or cats that can jump high to get to your poultry, you need to invest in a higher fence.

Unfortunately, your electric fence netting will only protect the area from the side. It’s not designed to create a covering for an enclosed area.

So, you can’t prevent flying predators from getting to your animals or garden. If flying predators are your main concern, consider adding a chicken wire roof or aviary netting.

What Affects How Strong the Pulse in Electric Fence Netting will be?

There are a few factors that determine how strong that shock will be when a predator walks into your netting:

  • Conductors: All parts of the electric fence netting that conduct the flow of electricity, affect the pulse. If your conductors have high resistance levels it means they can absorb more electrons. The result is a less serious shock.
  • Output: A major role player is the energizer you pick. This will deliver a certain output, measured in Joule. The higher this rating, the bigger shock you can expect.
  • The soil: Remember that a certain number of electrons will travel into the soil. The soil type and moisture level determine how much of the electricity will escape. If a lot of power escapes it will lower the strength of the pulse.
  • Setup: The best way to set up your electric fence netting is to design it without a gate. If you have a gate which affects the flow of energy, this will also impact the pulse strength. Rather just move the end sections if you ever have to let people or animals through to the other side of the fence.
  • Plants in the area: If any grass or plants touch the netting, some of the electrons can travel via them. This loss of power will make the pulse less strong. For this reason it’s important to keep your grass trimmed around the bottom of your fence.

Does Soil Affect How Well Electric Fence Netting Works?

Before you pick an energizer you actually need to consider the condition of the soil. If you set up electric fence netting in an extremely dry area, the soil will be less conductive.

This is because there are fewer water molecules that help with conduction. To compensate for the lack of moisture, you’ll need a stronger power source.

Other methods to try is to create a fence that has two types of wires: positive ones and negative ones. A positive/negative fence will result in a bigger shock. Just remember, an animal needs to touch a positive and a negative at the same time to receive a jolt of power.

You can also ensure your fence is effective by adding more ground rods.

Can Electric Fence Netting be Customized?

Many manufacturers understand the need for custom electric fence netting. You may need a specific color, height or spacing between the different strings.

Reputable manufacturers such as Elife can provide this to clients. You simply need to supply the necessary details or an example of the type of electric fence netting you need.

How to Identify Quality Elecric Fence Netting

You’ll find many electric fence netting providers, in brick and mortar stores as well as online. You need to make sure you purchase the right products that will be long-term investments. The features of quality electric fence netting are as follows:

  • Post quality: Your netting will only stay upright if strong posts support them. Make sure these plastic posts are of a good quality so they won’t quickly perish when exposed to the elements.
  • Spikes: The right type of post to invest in is a design with two spikes at the bottom. This ensures a more secure setup.
  • Installation: You want a user-friendly installation process, without using tools or equipment. Read up how long it should take you to set up your fence. Some products are so easy to use that even the average 12-year old will easily handle the weight and pushing the posts into the ground. When you invest in user-friendly electric fence netting sets, anyone can quickly set it up or take it down as needed, within minutes.
  • Energizer: Note that your purchase won’t always include an energizer. If it is included, make sure it can provide the Joule output you need that will deter the size animal you want to contain.
  • Reinforced parts: Respected manufacturers add reinforcements to the netting areas where you need it most. For example, with reinforced post caps, your posts last longer. Also, by strengthening the joins, your netting won’t tear easily.

Why do You Need Double Spikes When Installing Electric Fence Netting?

You don’t want your electric fence netting falling over. You need to make it sturdy enough so it won’t topple in strong wind or when an animal pushes against it. This is why it’s bests to invest in posts with two spikes. They provide better grip.

A post with two spikes is also an asset when you’re setting up a fence on hilly terrain.

How Long can Electric Fence Netting Last?

Electric fence netting is often used as a temporary measure but don’t be scared to leave it in place for long periods. Quality netting is designed to withstand the onslaught of the elements, so it won’t show wear and tear easily.

In many cases you can use your netting for two or three years before you need to replace it. However, you can check your netting regularly, maintain it well and then you may be able to use it up to five years.

What Energizer or Power Source do You Need for Electric Fence Netting?

You have multiple power options when you plan your electric fence netting. Customize your setup to suit your budget and application:

  • Batteries: You can use a deep cycle marine battery. This is easy to come by and you can carry it anywhere you need it. Just note that you shouldn’t’ use a normal car battery. There are also batteries specially designed for electric fencing.
  • Energizer: Today’s market also supplies energizers the are compatible with electric fence netting.
  • Solar power: You can install a solar panel along with your fence setup. This means you don’t have to pay for electricity. This is also helpful in remote areas far from other power sources. As long as there is enough sun during the day, your fence will have power.

How to Install Electric Fence Netting

Ease of installation is one of the major selling points of electric fence netting. Let’s show you how simple it can be. You simply need the netting and a rubber mallet:

  • Step 1: Carry your role of netting to where you want your fence to start.
  • Step 2: Unroll the first section of netting, from the first to the second post. Push the first post into the ground as an anchor.
  • Step 3: While carrying the roll of electric fence netting in your arms, walk the distance of your fence. As you move, let the netting unroll and fall onto the ground more or less in place where you’ll need it.
  • Step 4: Walk back to the first post, firmly push it into the ground. This is where the design of the posts come in handy. Most of them have a section at the bottom for you to step on. Use your own weight to push it into the soil firmly.
  • Step 5: Walk to each post, pull the netting tight and position it where you want your fence. Push the posts into place.
  • Step 6: Take a rubber mallet and hit each post firmly in place. The rubber won’t damage the top of the posts.
  • Step 7: Push your grounding rod into the soil. It doesn’t have to be totally covered.
  • Step 8: Connect your power source’s ground cable to the grounding rod.
  • Step 9: Connect the other cable to the fence itself, so the current can run through the horizontal strands.

You can do this in a few minutes, so setting up your new perimeter won’t cost you time or much effort.

Important tips: if your fence needs a gate, plan properly before you start. The best way is to make your gate the gap between two different sections of electric fence netting.

Make that gap big enough so that when you herd animals through, there’s enough space for multiple animals to move through at once. You don’t want the throng of animals pushing over your fence.

While you plan your fence, if you’re using a solar panel, make sure you can place it in a spot that gets a lot of sun.

How do You Avoid Fence Sagging in Electric Fence Netting?

One problem many people have with their electric fence netting is that it tends to sag. This is because the strands themselves are soft and flexible.

Your first solution is to make sure you set the posts far enough apart. The strands between two posts must be taught when the posts are in place.

When temperature or moisture causes the string to expand, the netting may still sag. Or perhaps the uneven terrain makes it difficult to install the posts where you want them.

In this case, simply add additional posts to your layout. They’re easy to add because you simply hook the netting to the posts.

How Can You Make Electric Fence Netting Safer?

Whenever you work with electricity, safety must be a priority. When you’re setting up your electric fence netting, make sure you cater for both human animal safety. Use the following checklist:

  • Visibility: Consider how visible your netting will be against the background. If you’re setting up a fence in an area where you expect snow, don’t use white electric fence netting. This will be invisible for any person or animal and they may hurt themselves trying to pass. Rather pick a bright color such as orange. In some situations, white will be best. For example, it’s often more visible than colored netting against a green, grassy background.
  • Energizer: Make sure you’re using an energizer suitable for electric fence netting. Experts will tell you that your energizer shouldn’t produce an output higher than 5 Joule. If you use such a device, make sure your setup also uses delayed pulse technology.
  • Installation: Make sure you create a sturdy installation that won’t topple and hurt an animal walking by. You should also make it easy for people and animals to walk alongside the fence. This may be necessary if someone is checking the fence or you’re herding animals along the fence. Create a path free of trees, plants, rocks and debris, right next to the fence. There you and animals can walk safely. Clearing this area will also limit grass and plants from disturbing your fence’s electricity flow.
  • Warning signs: You must warn people of your electric fence netting. They may not always notice the netting, even if you pick the right color. Attach warning signs to various posts in your fence, telling people to look out for the netting. You must also show that it’s an electrified fence.
  • Education: Anyone using the property, especially children, must be taught about the fence. Help them understand the dangers so they don’t injure themselves by accident because they’re curious or uninformed.

How Long Does it Take to Install Electric Fence Netting?

When you purchase electric fence netting, you get a kit that’s already assembled in the factory. You don’t need to connect any components. You simply need to put your fence in place.

Because the netting is so lightweight you don’t need a vehicle to transport it. You can simply carry it in your arms to each spot where you’ll insert a post.

This eliminates wasting time getting in and out of a vehicle, which is often necessary with other types of fence installation.

Walking across the fence area and inserting posts across 160ft can take as little as 10 or 15 minutes. It just depends on the type of terrain and soil you’re working on.

Can Grass or Weeds Affect Electric Fence Netting?

When grass or weeds touch your electric fence netting, electrons can flow from the wires through the plants. This can lower the strength of the pulse. For this reason it’s essential you keep all greenery away from the fence.

Clear a wide enough section so the area around your fence is clear of plants. Do regular inspections and cut away the plants where necessary.

How do You Test Electric Fence Netting?

You need to make sure your electric fence netting has the correct Voltmeter reading. As mentioned above, it must be strong enough to create a shock that will deter trespassers. So, use a voltmeter to ensure it’s above the necessary levels. In many cases this would be 3000V.

A voltmeter can be in the form of an electric fence tester. You’ll simply touch the meter to the fence and get a reading. Other designs require you to connect one part to the fence and the other to the ground.

Your voltmeter can also be part of a multimeter. Make sure you set the dial to the correct option to take an accurate reading.

How to Repair Electric Fence Netting

Repairing electric fence netting can be necessary if netting sags or when strands break. We already discussed sagging. It you must

repair a section of broken netting,

you will need:

  • A piece of replacement string similar to the existing netting
  • Ferrules
  • Scissors
  • Pliers

Many brands will include a repair kit with your initial purchase.

Work on the netting while it’s installed or take it down and work elsewhere. Just remember to disconnect it from the power source before you start.

To fix a horizontal strand:

  • Cut off damaged ends of the electric fence netting strands.
  • Cut off a piece of replacement string a few inches longer than the gap in the existing strand.
  • Tie the replacement string to the existing strand with a knot, 2” from the tip of that strand.
  • Tie the existing strand into a knot around the replacement strand.
  • Pull on the two strands so the knots push against each other and tighten.
  • Do the same on the other side.
  • Secure the loose ends with ferrulesand your pliers.

To fix a vertical strand:

  • Secure the ends to the horizontal strands above and below the gap in the string.
  • Make secure knots around the horizontals.
  • Secure the replacement string’s ends in place with ferrules.

Is Electric Fence Netting Reusable?

Electric fence doesn’t have to be a permanent installation. You can set it up for a period and take it down when it’s not needed anymore. You don’t have to discard it. Simply put it in storage neatly and you can reuse it in future.

How do You Correctly Store Electric Fence Netting?

When your electric fence netting is in storage, make sure it doesn’t get too much dust or moisture.

If it does it can deteriorate much faster than usual. Remember, there are metal parts in your fence, so you must prevent it from rusting.

Also roll it up in an orderly manner so it doesn’t get bent out of shape. There shouldn’t be any other items pushing against the posts. You don’t want them bending or breaking.

How Much Does Electric Fence Netting Cost?

For an electric fence netting kit you can pay roughly $170 for a 164ft roll of fence. Remember that not all kits include an energizer. Budget for these extras before you make your purchase.

How to Identify the Best Electric Fence Netting Supplier

If you’re looking for quality electric fence netting, it all starts with the supplier. Look for these characteristics and ask potential vendors about them before you commit to a purchase contract:

  • Is the company legally registered?
  • Does the brand have quality checks as part of their production process? You must be sure of buying durable products that will withstand pressure, UV rays and moisture.
  • Can they deliver quality products at reasonable prices? You shouldn’t go for the most expensive, because it may not necessarily be the best. Also, cheap products can be of low quality. Look for suppliers that provide the balance between quality and cost, while giving you value for money.
  • Read reviews and find out what others say about the brand.
  • Can you get the range of electric fence netting that you’re after? If your customers want different heights, use vendors that have many options so you don’t have to deal with multiple suppliers.
  • Does the supplier offer anything that protects your interests, such as guarantees or return policies?

How to Import Electric Fence Netting from China

Don’t worry. It’s relatively easy to import electric fence netting from China. You simply have to keep your paperwork in order. You must manage the following:

  • Bills of entry
  • Insurance documents
  • Purchase orders
  • Documents describing the technical aspect of your electric fence netting kits
  • Everything related to import licenses

We suggest you start off with a budget that includes items such as transport and custom costs. It’s also essential to verify that you’re working with a trustworthy supplier.

Make sure it’s a brand that won’t disappear with your money. You can check their credentials online and with databases available from China.
